Supporting Veterans at Home: A VA HISA Grant Project
At We Love Construction, some projects carry a deeper meaning. Recently, we had the privilege of completing a home accessibility project funded through the VA’s Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant program for an Army veteran in our community. As someone who retired from the United States Air Force, this project was especially meaningful to me on a personal level.
The VA HISA grant program is designed to help veterans make medically necessary improvements to their homes so they can live more safely and comfortably. These improvements often include accessibility modifications such as accessible bathrooms, walk-in showers, widened doorways, ramps, or other structural changes that support mobility and independence. The goal of the program is simple but powerful: to help veterans remain in their homes with dignity while improving their quality of life.
For this particular project, we worked closely with the veteran and coordinated the construction process so that the home could better meet their needs. Every step of the project was approached with care and respect for the service they gave to our country. It was incredibly rewarding to know that our work would help make everyday tasks safer and easier for them.
One of the things many veterans may not realize is that programs like the HISA grant exist and can make a significant difference. The application process typically begins with a recommendation from a VA physician who determines what modifications are medically necessary. From there, veterans submit the application along with contractor estimates and supporting documentation for approval through the VA. While the process can sometimes feel overwhelming, the end result can dramatically improve accessibility and independence at home.
As a veteran myself, I understand the pride and resilience that come with military service. Being able to support another veteran through this type of project felt like a continuation of that shared commitment to service. It is an honor to help ensure that those who have served our country have homes that support their health, safety, and comfort.
Projects like this remind us that construction is not just about building or renovating spaces. It is about creating environments where people can live well and feel supported. We are grateful for the opportunity to assist veterans in our community and proud to play a small part in helping them remain safely at home.
